WHAT IS THE MONORAIL?
The Monorail is a high-speed train that whizzes guests around the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s a fun and convenient way to get from one area of the resort to another, offering some great views of the parks and resorts.
The Disney Monorail has been a fixture of the Walt Disney World Resort since it first opened in 1971. It was the first monorail system in the United States, and it’s still one of the most popular transportation options at the resort.
The idea for the monorail first came about in 1959, when Walt Disney was planning the construction of Epcot park. He wanted a convenient way for guests to travel between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom park, and he decided to use a monorail system.
Construction on the monorail began in 1963, and it was completed in 1971. The original line ran from the Contemporary Resort to the Magic Kingdom park, with stops at the Ticket and Transportation Center and the Polynesian Village Resort.
In 1982, a second line was added that connected Epcot and the Ticket and Transportation Center.
Today, the Disney Monorail is one of the most popular ways to get around Walt Disney World Resort!
HOW DOES THE MONORAIL WORK?
The Monorail is powered by electricity and runs on a track elevated above the ground. It’s similar to a subway system, but it’s much faster and has a driver who controls the train’s speed.

Disney World Monorail Hacks
Using the Stairs at Magic Kingdom to Get to The Monorail Instead of the Ramp
If you’re leaving the Magic Kingdom, take the stairs instead of the ramp. It’s a lot less crowded, and you won’t have to wait.
Use the Disney Monorail Before or after the Crowds Leave Magic Kingdom. Otherwise, the Ferry is Faster
If you want to use the Monorail to return to your resort after the fireworks at Magic Kingdom, wait until most people have left the park.
The Monorail will be less crowded, and you won’t have to wait as long. Otherwise, the Ferry or Bus would be faster during high crowd times.
Take a Tour of the Resort Loop on a Rainy Day
Touring the Disney World resorts is a great way to see some of the most beautiful places in the world. Contemporary and Polynesian resorts are two of the most popular hotels at Disney.
The Contemporary Resort theme is a modern resort that is within walking distance from Magic Kingdom.
The Polynesian Resort is based on the South Pacific islands. It’s a great place to stay if you want to be close to the Magic Kingdom.
The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is a Victorian-style hotel within within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom.
The three resorts are located on the Monorail line, so it’s easy to get around between them.
The Disney World monorail resort loop is a great way to tour these three amazing resorts.
You can also get off at the resorts and explore more. I suggest it. Perhaps making dining reservations at one of these resorts will fit into your Disney plans.
Walk to Magic Kingdom from the Contemporary Resort
The Contemporary Resort is the closest hotel to Magic Kingdom. You can walk to the park in about 10 minutes.
It’s a pretty easy walk, and it’s a great way to get some exercise. If you have small children or someone at your party who can’t walk long distances, you can always take the Monorail.
The walkway to Magic Kingdom is well-lit and has a few places to rest along the way.
You can also take the Monorail one stop to the Magic Kingdom if you don’t want to walk.
When Does the Monorail Run?
The monorail schedule changes depending on the park hours. It starts running about 30 minutes before the parks open, and it runs for an hour after the parks close. The Monorail also runs between the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. The schedule for that route is different from the resort loop schedule.

More Disney World Transportation Tips
One of the best things about Disney World is that transportation is included in the price of your resort stay.
You can take buses, boats, and monorails to get around the parks, and there’s even a free shuttle service to and from your hotel. But with so many options, it can be tough to know which mode of transportation is right for you. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of Disney World’s transportation system:
-If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel, take advantage of the complimentary shuttle service. It’s convenient and easy to use, and it’ll save you the hassle of driving and parking at the parks.
-The buses are typically the quickest way to get around Disney World, but they can get crowded during peak times. If you want to avoid crowds, take the monorail or boat instead.
-If you’re visiting Magic Kingdom, consider taking the ferryboat from the Transportation and Ticket Center. It’s a relaxing way to start your day, and you’ll get some great views of Cinderella Castle as you cruise across Seven Seas Lagoon.
-If you’re short on time, take the skyliner between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s the fastest way to get between the two parks, and it’ll save you a lot of time walking.
-To avoid crowds, take advantage of the early morning hours at the parks. Most guests sleep in, so the parks are relatively empty during the early morning hours. You’ll be able to ride more rides and see more shows with less wait time.
